Remember hearing all those awful stories when we were younger about kids getting sick from eating lead paint. Well it turns out that today’s paint isn’t exactly as worry free as we may think. I’m not saying anyone sees a can of paint and says, “Oh thank GOD, I was starving.” It’s just that in the day and age when we have phones that can accidentally (or on purpose) send a picture of our own tits to anyone with an Instagram account, we should be able to put up a fucking coat of paint and not worry about what it’s doing to our health. I’ve done a lot of research on paint and one thing that everyone can agree on is that VOC’s are the enemy. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) are a variety of toxic gasses released from the colorants of most paints. They are toxins released into the air whether the paint is wet or dry, no eating required. I applaud all the shoppers I bump into in the grocery store who are checking labels as they shop (no seriously, sometimes I bump into them…I’m like Hellen Keller on a Segway with those damn carts). Well, why not take it the next level and do a little research on your paint before you cover the walls in your house with the stuff? Painting is a quick and easy way to redecorate, in a day you can totally change the look and feel of an entire room but choose low VOC or preferably no VOC paint. There’s no doubt that a gallon of no VOC paint is significantly more expensive than a standard can off the shelf but the peace of mind can be priceless.
